Sustainable Urban Horticulture Certificate

The Sustainable Urban Horticulture Certificate will focus on the environmental, social and economic implications of horticulture in our cities. Land management practices and choices that can maintain plants intended in urban landscape designs now and in the future, will be examined. Social sustainability maximizes the personal connection to nature and the enjoyment of gardens and plants.  Ecological sustainability and stewardship minimizes the ecological footprint of the garden, and maximizes the relevance of gardens and green spaces for promoting natural biodiversity. Course topics also influence micro-economic sustainability by adding to aesthetic and property values through innovative landscape design.

The Certificate is designed for urban gardeners, landscape designers and builders, naturalists, environmental advocates, municipal planners, public gardens staff, conservationists, nurseries and growers and Business Improvement Area (BIA) members.
